Compost bins

To make compost you will need a compost bin and a suitable location.

You can buy bins from many places including garden centers or your local council, but many people make their own.

To make a bin you can use just about anything as you just need to keep the matter contained. Scrap wood like pallets are a valuable resource. Always make sure you have a way of getting the compost back out of your bin by making a removable front or small hatch. The size of your home made bin will depend on how much waste you are doing to be recycling, always make it bigger then you first think as you will be surprised with how much waste you will be adding. As a cover you can use an old piece of carpet, a sheet or tarpaulin.

For the collection of your kitchen waste a plastic bin or bucket is perfect, make sure its not too large so that you can’t lift it and take it down to your garden compost bin!

Location.
Placing your bin on a level soil base is important so worms and other friendly microorganisms can gain access and speed up the decomposition process. If you can only place your bin on concrete its wise to lay a base of soil to get things started. A typical bin location is at the bottom of your garden but dot make it too far away and neglect it! If you can, try to get some sunlight on your compost as this will speed up the process considerably.
